  Scottish Regionals Results
Lt. Col. (Retd) Robert Owen

Granite City Brass competed at the Scottish Regionals on Saturday 13th March. Having competently performed to the adjudicators, it was clear that they did not like the style the band played.

Many thanks to Lt. Col. (Retd) Robert Owen, and also to Alan Haggart for the time dedicated to the preperation. The band looks forward to working with Lt. Col. Owen again in the future.

David James

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of David James, who passed away on the evening of Friday 12th February at the age of 68 after a long battle with emphysema.

Neil Ferguson

His death will cause considerable sadness, not only among his family and friends, but throughout the brass band world in general and particularly among his many former pupils. David William James was born in South Wales and, as a youngster, was principlal cornet of the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain. He became a trumpet player, studying at the Royal Academy of Music, and was subsequently appointed principal trumpet of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. He married Rita Cook, a gifted trumpet player herself and daughter of the legendary soprano player, Charlie Cook of Foden's Band. David eventually retired from playing due to dental problems, but he immersed himself in the world of brass teaching and brass bands, conducting Kirkintilloch, Broxburn, Bo'ness and Carriden, Yorkshire Imperial Metals, Rigid Containers, Carlton Main Frickley Colliery and Grimethope Colliery among many others, including our own Granite City Brass.

David James' funeral will be held at 1.30pm on Friday 26th February at Aberdeen Crematorium (West Chapel).
